Dear Members,

On behalf of the Board and myself we hope that you all had a great summer and are ready to get back to the grindstone. We have a few things to talk about and one of them is the CUNY contract. Members from CUNY have been calling concerned about the status of their contract? Our CUNY members should keep calling but at the same time you need to go after your State Senator and Assemblyman because the Governor is the one that is delaying Contract negotiations! He has done nothing but stall for the last five years unless we give him everything he wants. We sit on a coalition with DC37 and they are the lead negotiator. We have done everything within our power to try and bring you a contract but every chance we get closer it is stopped by the Governor’s office. The City is pretty much on board with settling but again it is being blocked at the state level. We are working hard to try and get our CUNY members a contract but we have a constant road block.

We have also received many calls in the office concerning Sick Leave. According to the City-Wide contract Sick Leave is to be used for personal illness. There are many requirements concerning documentation of sick leave and, if you feel that management is setting too many rules concerning your use of sick time you should take a look at the City-Wide Agreement. The rules for reporting sick though are determined by the agency and not the contract. This also appears in the City-Wide. We have a link on our website (local300csf.org) that will connect you with the City-Wide agreement because DC37 holds the bargaining certificate for the City-Wide since they have the most employees under contract with the City of New York.

Finally I would like to speak about our upcoming Presidential Election. After all the smoke settles this election will come down to an attack on Social Security. The Republicans want to privatize it!! We can’t allow this to happen because too many people depend on it to sustain their existence. You don’t get rich on Social Security it just helps you live. The Republicans particularly Jeb Bush are trying to portray Social Security as an entitlement. Entitlement according to Webster’s dictionary means it is given to you. Well I hate to tell Jeb and the rest of the right-wing lunatics that we all paid into Social Security. They have attacked and tried to do away with defined pensions with their greed and now there is one sacrificial lamb left, Social Security. Do we really want to go back to the days of the Depression? Think about it there are many ways to fix Social Security without privatizing it. Think about it the money tree for big business is withering away and they need to replenish their coffers. The republicans want everything and the rest of us can have crumbs. Revolutions have been started with less than this. If the President is Republican along with the House and Senate heaven help us.

Finally The Board and myself would like to invite you to our General Membership Meeting on Wednesday September 30, 2015 at 6:00PM in our Union Office located at 36-36 suite 200 Long Island City, New York, 11106. Refreshments will be served.

In Unity,

James Golden

President
