President Message

September 2013

Dear members,

The summer months have been pretty uneventful and I hope that all have had a summer of relaxation. The Executive Board has nothing to report on the contract front. Like all of the rest of the City Unions Local 300 is waiting for Mayor Bloomberg to leave.

There is no bargaining with a mayor that says you will take what I tell you. This was proven by the fact that he decided to send out an RFP for our health insurance without involving the Unions. As I write this we are in court saying this is a violation of an agreement that was made in the 1990’s between the City and the Unions. The agreement states that both sides must jointly agree to the RFP and each side has veto power over sending it out. This is a perfect example of you will do as I say which seem to be the message of our Mayor. In his first two terms he would say that it wasn’t right to expect workers to work without a contract but now the excuse is that it will give leverage to the next Mayor. This is just a way for the Mayor to send up a smokescreen to mask his arrogance and incompetence. We have our bargaining strategies in place and have made overtures to the City concerning them but always the response from the City is the same. The end of the Mayor’s term cannot come fast enough but it will, we just need patience.

The upcoming election is extremely important to us in that we need a pro labor candidate that is willing to negotiate in good faith with the municipal labor force. We have decided to withhold endorsing any candidate until after the primary. We welcome any observations or comments from our membership concerning this subject so please e-mail us with your thoughts about the upcoming election.

In 2014 there will be many changes taking place due to the enactment of the new Health Care law that was promoted by President Obama and passed by Congress and the Senate. We will try to keep you updated on the sweeping changes that will start in 2014.

In the following pages of this Newsletter the Executive Board is announcing a new benefit for our membership. We think that Heart Scan will greatly benefit our members and we hope that all will use it. The CEO of the company will be at our General Membership meeting to answer any questions that you might have. We hope to see you at our General Membership Meeting taking place in the Union Office located at 36-36 33rd Street Suite 200 at 6:00PM on Wednesday September 25, 2013. Refreshments will be served.

In Unity,

James Golden
