President Message

June 2018

Dear Members,

I hope all of you had a happy spring holiday season. I would like to take this time to inform all that we are in negotiations with the City concerning a new contract. Although these negotiations are in the early stages we are trying to complete these negotiations as soon as possible. Remember our contract expires on June 22, 2018. We extended the contract by four months so we could receive an additional .52% that would be allocated to our Annuity Fund. This .52% will be the initial contribution in the establishment of an Annuity Fund for the titles of Administrative Procurement Analyst and Administrative Quality Assurance Specialist.

I would like to take this time to applaud Governor Cuomo and the additional amendments he has added to the Taylor Law to preserve the existence of Unions in the State of New York. This move was made to counter the possible decision in the Supreme Court over Mark Janus vs American Federation of State and Municipal Employees Council 31, Et Al….. The crux of the case is over fee payers within the union. Janus feels he shouldn’t have to pay a Union to negotiate for him or represent him since they have to do it anyway. Of course if everyone took this attitude there would not be a Union to represent them and then management could do whatever they want. Thankfully that people in Management of Municipalities realize that Unions help keep proper order and maintain stability within the municipalities.

There has been an attack on Unions for decades by the rich and right-wing conservatives to slowly destroy Unions. We must not allow this to happen and we won’t. Remember the reason we have good wages, health benefits and a pension plan is thanks to Unions. We all make less than the private sector but we took these jobs for security. We received good benefits, good vacation time and a pension so we could live out our final days with peace of mind. Now we are demonized for this choice by the Right. Most of these people are well set up because they have been living off the backs of the working class for centuries. We are stronger together, many as one. We are all members of the working class, we all have dreams and aspirations, they might be different from one another but we are all looking for the same thing. To be treated with respect and to be able to go home every night and enjoy our down time however we choose to do so.

In closing I hope to see all of you at our next General Membership Meeting on Wednesday June 27, 2018 at 6:00PM in the Union Office located at 36-36 33rd Street suite 200 L.I.C. New York 11106. Refreshments will be served.

In Unity,

James Golden
