President Message

June 14, 2015

Jimmy Picture

Dear Members,

We are approaching the summer months and I hope all of you are well. We have been working very hard to negotiate a contract on behalf of our CUNY brothers and sisters. At the writing of this message we have nothing to report as of as the delay as always is the State.

I am printing a quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a speech that he made in the wake of the depression as he ran for President of the United States.

“A glance at the situation today only too clearly indicates that equality of opportunity as we know it no longer exists. Our industrial plant is built…. Our last frontier has long since been reached, and there is practically no more free land…. Recently a careful study was made of the concentration of business in the United States. It showed that our economic life was dominated by some six hundred odd corporations who controlled two thirds of American industry……

As I see it, the task of government in its relation to business is to assist the development of an economic declaration of rights, an economic constitutional order… Every man has a right to life; and this means that he has also a right to make a comfortable living. He may by sloth or crime decline to exercise that right; but it may not be denied to him….”

This quote is from the late 1920’s or early 1930’s but is still relative today. As much as we progress as a society we really never change. The worker has always been used to balance the budget or increase profits. In 2015 we have not changed from the 1930’s and we all need to wake up and smell the coffee. We are now stigmatized by the Republican Party and its political action committees because we have Health Benefits and a Pension. They fail to realize that we have taken less money over the years for these benefits but yet we are at fault.

This upcoming Presidential election is very important just because the Congress and Senate is controlled by the Republicans. Vote and vote Democrat because a republican President along with a Republican Congress and Senate will set back organized labor in this country to the time of Pinkerton guards and total disregard for the rights of the worker. We need government even though according to the Republican Party we have too much government.

This is just food for thought. I hope to see you all at our next General Membership meeting taking place in the Union Office located at 36-36 33rd Street Suite 200 L.I.C., New York 11106, on Wednesday June 24, 2015 at 6:00PM. Refreshments will be served.

In Unity,

James Golden

President
